Age Uke
« on: December 12, 2007, 09:20:02 AM »
When performing age uke should you raise your reaction hand up high before performing the technique with your other arm?

I'm asking this specifically in response to MB's drive to get us back to more 'JKA style' techniques. What is the JKA way?

JKA WHEN ?

Performing it WHEN ? (Kihon or Kumite?)

In Kihon practice I think that the Age Uke should always be treated a the "Secondary Block" - i.e. YES to your question

In Kumite drills as opposed to 3/5/1-Step I go for just blocking arm - unless I really don't like the opponent (or simply want to break their concentration with the other hand)  :?

Agree with Jimmy. Unfortunatly

We were taught that by pulling the left hand back to practice Hikite ,Hip Rotation and Kime.
another example of simplicity being bloody difficult

If I remember correctly on Kawasoe's DVD he raises his reaction hand first, so If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me! [-o<
When all else fails, refer to the manual

Good point. IIRC Sensei Naito always raises his reaction hand first too.

Never mind the Bloomin' DVD - it's still the way he teaches it at EVERY Course up here !!! - given the question I had just "assumed" that Sensei was "dumbing it down" for you guys to keep it simple
