I couldn't do training tonight because of the cold i've got. That's no excuse for not getting the kids to train. So how to train a child who knows his grading but lacks the understanding of the loading of the back leg and push off needed when stepping forward or back. I've used many different things to train from walking sticks to masking tape, now comes the fun game with the kids.
front stance on a rug on the wooden floor, now tell them simply to move the rug back when stepping, first dozen no movement, then the sensation of rug moving from under them, plenty of praise, the stance goes lower the power increases and hey presto -loading of the back leg, just increase the weight on the rug to make it more difficult. SIMPLES!!!!:-)
I'M NOT SAYING ITS PERFECTLY SAFE, SO DO AS YOU SEE FIT, MAKE SURE THERE IS A GROWN UP TO HELP.

Has your cold gone yet?Seing as I'm almost certain that I cought your cold in the meeting last sunday we're probably going to have it for the same length of time.Colds are so pointless.I didn't do any personal training Tuesday or Wednesday so that I could come to training last night,I thought that it was a good plan, but it didn't work Evil or Very Mad I'm going to training monday cold or not.

Back on topic,I've just had a thought.
B&D I remember you saying before that you helped Melen and Owain to differentiate between Keage and Kekomi, what did you use?
A few people have asked me to help them with the Keage in Heian Nidan,so I'm on the case, but I think I'm going to have to find another way of explaining/ demonstrating.

with kids you have to think outside the box, they don't think the same, or things are so simple its us who make things difficult, when to them its not. So no blaming the kids just think its us that are making it difficult for them.
as for the keagie, kekome simple really. Just think what is the result you want and work back - stick in front needs to go forward using only the side of the foot - -kekome, don't tell them how just point them to the stance you want an let them work it out if need be put a small piece of masking tape on the area of the foot you want to make contact with the stick - hey presto kekome
as for keagie exactly the same but the stick is vertical and needs to go up, don't give them too much to think about.

SORRY -  KEKOME THE STICK IS VERTICAL IN FRONT,
KEAGIE THE STICK IS HORIZONTAL ABOVE THE WAIST OR CHEST OR HEAD IF THEY ARE NIMBLE.
